ESSENTIAL TRIP INFORMATION

IS THIS TRIP RIGHT FOR YOU?

This tour is moderately paced but does include some long travel days, including several internal flights and early starts. You will be walking through archaeological sites, cobbled streets, and jungle trails, and exploring places like Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, and Rio de Janeiro’s hilly neighbourhoods, which may require navigating stairs, uneven surfaces, or inclines.

Our tours do require a certain level of fitness and mobility. You should be able to carry your own bags at times, as porter services may not be available in remote lodges or at train stations. Travellers should be comfortable walking without the assistance of a walking aid, and able to manage short hikes, stairs, and standing for periods during guided tours. Some sections of the trip—such as the Amazon lodge stay and Machu Picchu visit—take place in remote or natural environments with limited access to paved paths.

Altitude will also be a factor in areas like Cuzco and Machu Picchu, which may cause mild discomfort for some travellers.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for all Hosted Holidays. It’s important that you protect yourself in case of natural disasters, lost or delayed baggage and unforeseen medical expenses. We strongly recommend that the policy covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, repatriation and loss of luggage and personal effects.  Make sure you keep any receipts for anything you may wish to claim for on your return – i.e. medical receipts etc. Please make sure you bring a copy of your policy with you on tour. We recommend that you take out travel insurance at the time of paying your deposit.

LOCAL CUSTOMS & ETIQUITTE

South Americans are known for their warmth and friendliness. In Argentina and Brazil, it’s common to greet others with a kiss on the cheek or a warm handshake. While punctuality is flexible in local culture, it’s expected that you be on time for tours and transport. Dress modestly when visiting churches or sacred sites. Tipping is customary and is included for our group activities. When shopping in markets or photographing local people, always ask permission first and respect personal space. In many regions, toilet paper should not be flushed and instead disposed of in bins provided.

PASSPORTS, VISAS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Passports

All information provided is based on Australian Passport holders only – please advise your travel consultant as soon as possible if you are travelling on a different passport.

All passengers must have a valid passport for travel.   Australian passport holders must have a minimum of 6 months validity on their passport from the date they return home.   A copy of the photo page of your passport is to be provided to Hosted Holidays at time of booking your tour.

Visa Requirements for Australians Travelling to Brazil

From April 10, 2025, Australian citizens will once again require a visa to enter Brazil – even for short visits.  Hosted Holidays have included the cost of this Visa as part of your tour.

The visa required is the Visitor Visa (VIVIS) for tourism. The visitor visa is valid for stays up to 90 days.  Processing time is approximately 2 to 5 business days.

Hosted Holidays will provide a form to your Travel Agent to be completed with all necessary information to obtain your Visa approximately 3 months prior to departure

Australian Passport Holders no longer require a Visa to enter Chile, Argentina or Peru.

  • Note all information is correct at time of printing.   Please check with your Travel Agent prior to departure.

FOOD & DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

If you have any specific dietary requirements, please ensure that you have advised your travel agent via the booking form. All requirements will be passed onto our venues and catered for to the best of their ability.

The meals included on this tour offer a delicious introduction to local cuisines, from Argentine steak to Peruvian ceviche and Brazilian churrasco, the culinary experiences are a highlight.

For coffee lovers, Peru and Brazil offer rich, locally grown brews worth tasting.

The tap water throughout South America may not be suitable for drinking. The safest option is to stick to purified bottled water. Make sure you are purchasing sealed bottles and watch the seal being broken on the bottle.

MEDICAL & HEALTH INFORMATION

Travellers may experience some altitude-related symptoms in places like Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Consult your doctor before departure regarding altitude sickness and recommended vaccinations, which may include Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and routine boosters. Be sure to carry enough of any personal medications for the entire trip. It is advised to carry any medication you're taking in its original container and have a clear label. Prescription and controlled medication must be accompanied by a prescription from the prescribing physician on letterhead stationery and include the medication's generic name.   Mosquito protection is essential in the Amazon and tropical areas like Iguazu.

YELLOW FEVER

Many countries in South America require proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever as a condition on entry.  A valid international vaccination certificate may be requested at airports or land borders, and travellers without one may be denied entry.  Some countries may also ask to see this certificate upon your return home.  We strongly recommend confirming the requirements with your Travel Agent well in advance and arranging vaccination where necessary.

MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES

Certain regions of Central and South America are prone to mosquito-borne illness such as dengue and malaria. There is no vaccine available for dengue, but simple precautions can greatly reduce risk:  wear long-sleeved clothing, apply insect repellent, and stay indoors during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk. Should you develop a fever or feel unwell, notify your Tour host or Tour Guide promptly.

 PACKING SUGGESTIONS

It is advised to carry any medication you’re taking in its original packaging with a clear label. Prescription and controlled medication must be accompanied by a prescription from the prescribing physician on letterhead stationery and include the medication’s generic name.  Please ensure you bring enough prescribed medicine to cover the entire length of your trip. The ship onboard medical facility does not supply prescribed medication

We suggest that you confer with your own physician to be sure your routine immunizations, are up to date before travelling.  Older travellers may wish to consider preventive measures against influenza and pneumonia

SAFETY

We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe keeping of your passport, cash, and other valuable items. Please leave other valuables, such as jewellery, at home. Most accommodations provide safety deposit boxes, an excellent way of storing your valuables. We also advise you to keep a photocopy of your passport, separate from your actual passport, when you travel.

A lock is recommended for securing your luggage.

Your Host will accompany you on all included activities, however during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax, and take it easy or explore at your leisure. You should use your own judgment when choosing activities or excursions, which do not form part of the trip you have booked with Hosted Holidays. We can oer assistance in choosing how to spend your free time, but neither Hosted Holidays, nor any of its representatives can provide any guarantee about the safety or suitability of any activities or excursions, nor about the operators who organise these.

As in all countries, taking photos of police stations, border crossings, immigration controls, army barracks, military personnel or checkpoints, airports or political demonstrations is never a good idea, often illegal, and very likely to land you in trouble with the authorities.

Swimming and other water-based activities are always undertaken at your own risk.

Please also note that your Host has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.

Currency:

  • Argentina – Argentine Peso (ARS)
  • Brazil – Brazilian Real (BRL)
  • Peru – Peruvian Sol (PEN)
  • Chile – Chilean Peso (CLP)

In all destinations, US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted in tourist areas, and are often preferred for tipping, excursions, and souvenir purchases.

Spending Money During Your Trip:
Spending habits vary by traveller, but you should allow enough cash for souvenirs, drinks, snacks, optional excursions, laundry, or personal expenses during your free time. While some expenses can be paid by card, smaller purchases and tips are best handled in local currency or USD.

Gratuities:
Gratuities for included activities and meals are already covered in your Hosted Holiday. However, tips for optional tours or personal services are at your discretion and always appreciated.

Credit Cards:
Visa and MasterCard are accepted in most cities, hotels, and larger restaurants. American Express is accepted at some major hotels but may not be as widely accepted in smaller establishments. A surcharge may apply to credit card transactions. In markets, local shops, or rural areas such as the Amazon or Sacred Valley, cash is the only acceptable method of payment. Do not rely on traveller’s cheques, as they are rarely accepted.

It is recommended to carry some US Dollars in cash, especially in small denominations. Be sure the notes are clean, undamaged, and printed after 2006, as older or torn bills may be rejected by local money changers and banks.

ATMs:
ATMs are widely available in major cities such as Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, and Cuzco, but may be unreliable or unavailable in remote areas like the Amazon rainforest and Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). It’s a good idea to withdraw or exchange cash before travelling to these regions.
